Our Events
Project AIMESS intends to educate elementary-age children by hosting biweekly after-school classes on weekdays at elementary schools in Northern Virginia. These classes will focus on ideas within the STEM curriculum, with additional focus on the arts to foster creativity. Specific classes may focus on the characteristics and technological uses of water, examining the Earth using geotechnical engineering, or learning human anatomy through biomedical engineering. Throughout these classes, which are taught by capable high school students, the children will be taught using various resources, such as Prezi presentations, hands-on activities, and open-ended questioning. Although the concepts appear complex, our organization simplifies STEM ideas into a language that elementary-age children can understand. By involving the children in such activities, we hope to instill a yearning for knowledge among the younger generation.
Furthermore, our goals are to teach approximately 30 students in our first year of operation, hopefully creating 30 students in our area that can be allowed an outlet to express themselves as well as learn about the areas that will propel the American economy forward-- that is, STEM. By providing a great way for these students to learn and have fun, we hope to further raise awareness of the lack of individuals entering STEM fields in the United States. In future years, we would like to expand to additional schools in our area, and eventually to create a middle-school division of Project AIMESS to continue the growth of the students originally mentored in their elementary school years.
